Genèse: The project began in 2003 as an internet musical made up of nine songs that retold the entire story. The audio tracks became popular to the extent that a live show was conceived and staged. Six additional songs were written by Jon and Al, and the book was written by Hunter Bell, based on the original screenplay Silence! The Musical, also by Jon and Al Kaplan. A soundtrack album featuring the original nine tracks was made available "For fun only. Not for sale." The stage musical premiered in the Lucille Lortel Theatre, New York, on 12 August 2005 as part of the New York International Fringe Festival, and showed until 28 August 2005. The production was directed by Christopher Gattelli. Silence! had its European premiere in London on 19 October 2009, showing for two weeks at the Barons Court Theatre. The run was directed by David Phipps-Davis. Christopher Gattelli's production subsequently transferred to the Above The Stag Theatre, running from 19 January - 28 February 2010. Directed and choreographed by Gattelli, this production featured new material written for its London outing. An off-Broadway mounting of the show opened June 24-September 26, 2011 at Theatre 80, directed and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli. It transferred to the 9th Space Theatre at PS 122 on October 24, 2011.
Résumé: In the beloved movie, rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling matches wits with the brilliant but insane cannibal, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, to catch the serial killer known only as Buffalo Bill. Clarice must face her own demons and race the clock to unlock Lecter's clues before another innocent girl is killed and skinned by Bill. It's a hair-raising thriller that has kept countless millions on the edges of their seats and permeated the pop lexicon with delightfully creepy quotes like "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti" and of course "It places the lotion in the basket". And now, at last, this delicate symphony of suspense has been turned on its ear and retold in the only way it can be-- as a musical. A singing chorus of floppy-eared lambs narrates the action; Buffalo Bill gleefully dances a hoedown while kidnapping hapless Catherine Martin; and even Dr. Lecter, scary as ever, sings about the life he'd like to lead someday outside the prison walls.
